Leon Markiewicz graduated from
Music Academy in Katowice, where he studied pedagogy and theory of music. Afterwards he received a doctor's degree at the Musicology Institute of Warsaw University and later on, at Institute of Art of Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, he obtained the title of an assistant professor. In 1984 he was nominated for a professorship.
From the beginning of his professional activity he has been closely connected with Music Academy in Katowice, where he was managing, among others, Faculty of the Theory of Music and recently Faculty of Music Education. From 1975 he was a vice-chancellor and from 1979 till 1981 - Chancellor of this Academy.
He is the author of over 100 publications and scientific treatises as well as of about 300 music reviews and journalistic articles. Not only does he popularise music during concerts, radio and TV programmes but also organises various musical events and scientific sessions. For many years he has participated in organising consecutive editions of Grzegorz Fitelberg International Competition for Conductors as its director and the secretary of Jury. At present he is the director of the 7th edition (2003) and the president of Grzegorz Fitelberg Music Foundation.
On 31st January, 1998, died Professor Karol Stryja, initiator and creator of the International Grzegorz Fitelberg Conductors' Contest and multiple Chairman of the Contest Jury.
One of the most outstanding Polish conductors of 20th century, untiring propagator of Polish music on world concert stages, ambassador of Polish national culture in Europe, America and Asia.
6th International Grzegorz Fitelberg Conductors' Contest was dedicated to His memory.
